float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="964" data-original-width="1580" height="195" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpv4rtqb-cbakrO15oQhdvUIVij2T-gHJOz0NAQYJRUjNQL4-JhL5HKKT4os1UpydjgYoMQKhyphenhyphenL3AWhEKH1vVbGa0YAR8SFyZJV_n7RPUDqlXxo4yIX-hRTRjP-4BJRdlEVTlR1ye9E4hT/s320/follow-by-email-gadget-and-feedburner-subscription-service-for-blogger-blogs.png" width="320" /></a></div>The Follow-by-Email gadget is a very <a href="http://blogger-hints-and-tips.blogspot.com/2011/03/follow-by-email-gadget-easy-way-to-add.html">simple way to give your readers access to blog-updates by email:</a> it delivers a message in their inbox every day that you post.<br /><br />But to decide if it's a good thing to use, to get good value from it, and to troubleshoot any problems, you need to understand a little more about how it works.<br /><br />And, since it uses Feedburner, this means understanding how Feedburner works, too.<br /><br /><br /><h2>What is Feedburner</h2>The Follow by Email gadget uses a product called Feedburner to manage the list of people who have followed, ie subscribed to your blog.  <br /><br />Feedburner was originally a tool to enhance the RSS subscriptions that website-owners delivered - see <a href="http://blogger-hints-and-tips.blogspot.com/2010/08/why-rss-subscribe-to-posts-is-important.html">Why RSS / Subscribe to Posts is important for your blog</a>  for info about RSS.   Very roughly speaking, every time a website publishes a new item, Feedburner adds that item to a "feed" or summary of the site, and tells all the subscribers about it, without the subscribers having to visit the website.<br /><br />One option that Feedburner added was subscribe-by-email:  website owners who use Feedburner for this have to turn the service on, and then put "something" on their website that offers the service to people who want to get emailed updates.   To start with, Feedburner just kept a list of emails addresses, but now it's more sophisticated:   it checks with addresses that they really do want to be subscribed before adding them to the list, and offers an un-subscribe option with each subscription email.<br /><br />Adding the follow-by-email option to your blog sets this up for you.   It:<br /><br /><ul><li>Sets up a feed, </li><li>Turns the email service "on", and </li><li>Puts an email--address request box onto your blog.   </li></ul><br /><br /><br /><h2>What is set up when you add the follow-by-email gadget</h2>The Follow-by-email gadget can be added to your blog <a href="http://blogger-hints-and-tips.blogspot.com/2012/03/adding-gadget-to-your-blog-using.html">the same way you would add any other gadget</a>.   Doing this this means that, you are logged in to a <a href="http://blogger-hints-and-tips.blogspot.com/2010/10/understanding-google-accounts.html">Google account</a> at the time.<br /><br />If that Google account <b>already owns an entry</b> (ie a "feed") in Feedburner for the blog you're adding the gadget to, then the gadget just uses this feed.<br /><br />But if the Google account <b>doesn't currently have an entry</b> from the blog, then a new feed is created, and the email service is turned on for it.:<br /><ul><li>The Feed Title is based on the blog's name.  </li><li>The feed address appears to be fairly random (eg I created one for a blog called "Another test blog", and the feed name is    <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/blogspot/meaUW">http://feeds.feedburner.com/blogspot/meaUW</a> </li></ul><div class="separator" style="clear: both; </script><br /><br /><h2>Advantages of the Follow-by-email gadget</h2>This gadget makes it a lot easier to offer a follow-by-email option:  you don't have to set up the feed yourself, or use a HTML-gadget to provide a subscribe-by-email form.<br /><br />And because it uses Feedburner, you have full access to Feedburner's statistics, and a number of other things that are included in Feedburner's features, including:<br /><ul><li><a href="http://blogger-hints-and-tips.blogspot.com/2011/03/customising-feedburners-email.html">Customizing the "click the link to subscribe" message</a>, </li><li><a href="http://blogger-hints-and-tips.blogspot.com/2011/01/getting-list-of-people-who-have-asked.html">Getting a list of all your email subscribers</a> (verified and unverified), and </li><li>Configuring the look-and-feel (including timing and from-address) of the daily email to your follow-by-emailers. </li></ul><div><br /></div><h2>Disadvantages of the Follow-by-email gadget</h2>There are some disadvantages of both the gadget, and the approach that Blogger has used to implement it:<br /><ul><li>Google / Blogger have mixed up the words "subscribers" and "followers".  It used to be that subscribers used RSS gadgets (from Feedburner or other feed-providers), and followers used Blogger's own following-tools.   But this new gadget is called "follow-by-email", and it's possible that mixing up the ideas will make some people very confused.</li></ul><ul><li>Using the gadget, you have <b>very little control over the look and feel</b> of the  follow-by-email option on your blog.   <br /><br />Compare this to the "Get updates by email" option which is in the top of the sidebar on this blog:  I've put a lot of effort into getting the wording "just right" so potential subscribers know that they will be getting a please-confirm email.   This on-screen wording means that even if they don't act on the email immediately, they get another reminder about if they come back to the blog again in the future.</li><li>You have no control over the message that potential follow-by-emailers are shown to tell them to verify their subscription.  It looks like this<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; <b>This article is about centering gadgets from 3rd parties that you install onto your blog.</b> <br /><br /><b><br /></b> <br /><div style="clear: both;"></div><a name="more"></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinKxEgCOxgTeBWv6ABd0INi-LzO8aNMwMxTyVroS5CXNdpT6PjcS5wfKzi4gQ2K9WkMVmWHcJip-PuguGQ65utHEODXafKZsiErcMX3Lu2ciTHcvlsf0bimamAAukF4cY6i3cPx4rZ224/s1600/center-align-put-gaget-in-the-middle-of-header-footer-or-sidebar.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="143" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEinKxEgCOxgTeBWv6ABd0INi-LzO8aNMwMxTyVroS5CXNdpT6PjcS5wfKzi4gQ2K9WkMVmWHcJip-PuguGQ65utHEODXafKZsiErcMX3Lu2ciTHcvlsf0bimamAAukF4cY6i3cPx4rZ224/s200/center-align-put-gaget-in-the-middle-of-header-footer-or-sidebar.png" width="200" /></a></div>Previously, I've described <a href="http://blogger-hints-and-tips.blogspot.com/2010/10/putting-html-code-from-third-party-into.html">how to put HTML code from a 3rd party into your blog</a>.<br /><br />When code like this is<a href="http://blogger-hints-and-tips.blogspot.com/2012/03/adding-gadget-to-your-blog-using.html"> put into a gadget</a>, one common question is "how do I center it?"<br /><br />There are (at least) three options for doing this, ie for putting a gadget into the middle (horizontally) of the area it is located in.   These are described below.<br /><br /><br /><h2>Option 1: Centre all the gadgets in your blog</h2>To center-align every single gadget in your blog, just, <a href="http://blogger-hints-and-tips.blogspot.com/2010/09/adding-new-css-formatting-rule-to-your.html">add a CSS rule to your blog</a>.  The rule to add is:<br /><blockquote style="background-color: #ead1dc;">.widget {<br />  text-align: center;<br />} </blockquote><br />This will centre the <i><b>contents and title</b></i> of every gadget on your blog.<br /><br /><br /><h2>Option 2: Only center-align the specific gadget</h2>To only centre-align one gadget, which is made from HTML/Javascript code, you can just put the gadget-code from the 3rd party (eg PayPal, Amazon, etc) inside a centering statement, like this:<br /><br /><blockquote style="background-color: #ead1dc;"><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><br />PUT THE CODE FROM THE 3RD PARTY HERE<br /><br /></div></blockquote>Install the code into your blog the way you would usually <a href="http://blogger-hints-and-tips.blogspot.com/2010/10/putting-html-code-from-third-party-into.html" target="_blank">install this 3rd party code</a>.<br /><br />This will centre-align the contents (not title) of the specific gadget that you add.<br /><br />Note the American spelling of the word "<b>center</b>" - and don't forget to put the closing </div> statement at the end.<br /><br />There may be some gadgets where it would be possible to add the centring statement to the gadget code itself, rather than putting it outside.    I don't recommend this (unless you're so comfortable with HTML and CSS that you don't need to be reading this article), because it introduces a risk that you will interfere with some other aspect, or that you will lose the centering if you ever need to refresh the code.<br /><br /><br /><h2>Option 3 - Make a new style rule just for the gadget</h2>If you only want to centre one (or several) gadgets - not all of them - then it's best to define a new style that is to be used on specific gadgets:  <a href="http://blogger-hints-and-tips.blogspot.com/2010/09/adding-new-css-formatting-rule-to-your.html">put this new style into your template</a>, and then apply it to the gadgets like this.<br /><blockquote style="background-color: #ead1dc;"><div style="background-color: #ead1dc;"><div class="YourNewSytle"></div><div style="background-color: #ead1dc;"><br /></div><div style="background-color: #ead1dc;">PUT THE CODE FROM THE 3RD PARTY HERE</div><div style="background-color: #ead1dc;"><br /></div><span style="background-color: #ead1dc;"></div></span></blockquote><br />This approach will only centre the gadget contents - not any header that you give to it.<br /><br />There are lots of options that you could put into the new style rule, but at a minimum it needs to have<br /><blockquote style="background-color: #ead1dc;"><b>.</b>YourNewStyle<br />{<br />  text-align: center;<br />}</blockquote>Notice that there is a "." usual way</a>.<br /><br /><br /><h3>2  Place the gadget</h3>Drag-and-drop the gadget to the place where you want it.   It may be over or under your blog-posts gadget, or in a totally different place.<br /><br />A popular place for a gadget that is going to look like a "home page" would be in the Body section, just above the Blog Posts gadget, where "Test Gadget" is in this example:<br /><br in the search box inside the template editor, and look for the widget name that you noted in step 3.   Once you've found it, notice what comes after it.   In this example, it's the line for Blog1:<br worked</b></h3>Preview your blog before you save the changes:  check that the the widget is visible.<br /><br />Save the template changes, and look at your blog.  Check that<br /><ul><li>The widget is on the first page</li><li>The widget is not seen when you look at an older page (eg one from your archive)</li><li>The other elements of your blog (other widgets, blog post titles, dates and contents) are all as you expect them - on the first screen, and on other screens too.</li></ul><br />If anything is wrong with how your blog is working, go back to the template editor (Layout > Edit HTML), and upload from the copy of your template that you made at the beginning of step 1.   This will let you blog work properly, while you figure out what went wrong.<br /><br /><br /><h2>How to display a gadget only on a specific post or page</h2><br />Follow exactly the same approach as above.<br /><br />But instead of   <br /><blockquote class="tr_bq"><b><i><b:if cond='</i></b><b><i>data:blog.canonicalUrl</i></b><b><i> == data:blog.homepageUrl'></i></b></blockquote><br />Make the conditional statement based on something else.<br /><br />This can be a different condition, or a specific page URL.    For example to display a gadget only on a specific page, use this code, and put the address of the page instead of POST-URL:<br /><blockquote And losing complicated gadget code, even once, is a good incentive to remember to back it up every time.<br /><br /><b>Hint:</b> Put a comment to remind yourself where to back this gadget at the top and/or bottom of the gadget code. This reduces the chance that you will forget. A comment is done in HTML like this:<br /><blockquote class="tr_bq"><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><!-- DON'T FORGET TO BACK UP THIS GADGET CODE  --></span></blockquote><br /><br /><h2>How to back up complicated non-code gadgets</h2>If your gadget has complicated settings which aren't code, one option is to take a screen-shot and save it to your photo collection, or even just a text-file or documentation-blog post where you keep notes about what the settings are.<br /><br />You won't be able to automatically restore your gadget settings from this, but it should be a good reminder of what you need to do (provided you can find the picture when you need it).<br /><br />Unfortunately there's no easy way to pack up linked-list or blogroll gadgets at the moment. However making a copy of your site using HTTracker will show you the list, and what the items link to.<br /><br />Or you could build your linked list code manually (using <a href="http://blogger-hints-and-tips.blogspot.com/2010/05/getting-html-code-to-put-picture-into.html">the same trick that that I recommend for getting picture code</a>) and put it into a HTML/Javascript gadget, which is based up as described above. border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"></div><ul><li>The <strong>title</strong> for the Gadget, </li><li>The <strong>caption</strong> for the picture <br /><i>(the small words that go underneath it, usually explaining it, or where it came from), </i></li><li>What should happen when a reader clicks the picture - put this into the <strong>Link</strong> field</li><li><strong>Where</strong> to find the picture <br /><i>(ie the file-location that you copied in step 2)</i></li><li>Whether to <strong>re-size</strong> (ie shrink) the picture to fix the space in the sidebar in your current template.</li></ul><br /><div></div>5 Press <b>Save</b>.<br /><br />6  If necessary, <strong>drag-and-drop</strong> the new gadget to the place where you want the picture to go, and press <strong>Save</strong>.<br /><br /><div><br /><h2>What your visitors see</h2></div><div>People who visit your blog in a web-browser, will see the picture, in the place where you put the gadget.  However pictures are not <a href="http://blogger-hints-and-tips.blogspot.com/2012/01/adding-gadgets-to-dynamic-view.html">supported gadgets</a> for <a href="http://blogger-hints-and-tips.blogspot.com/2011/09/dynamic-templates-turning-them-on-in.html">dynamic view templates</a>, so it won't be see if you use one of these.<br /><br />Also, people who <a href="http://blogger-hints-and-tips.blogspot.com/2010/08/why-rss-subscribe-to-posts-is-important.html">see your blog through an RSS reader</a>, or by receiving<a href="http://blogger-hints-and-tips.blogspot.com/2011/03/follow-by-email-gadget-easy-way-to-add.html"> emailed updates</a> don't see any gadgets, so they will not see the picture.   <br /><br />If you entered a value for Link, your visitor's browser leaves your blog and goes to the Link location:  with the Picture gadget, then there is no way to make this open a new window.   If you want to do so, then use an HTML gadget instead, <a href="http://blogger-hints-and-tips.blogspot.com/2010/05/getting-html-code-to-put-picture-into.html">get the code for the picture</a>, and put <b>target = "_blank"</b>   into it:, so the code looks something like: </div><blockquote><a href="YOUR LINK" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; (I've previously explained <a href="http://blogger-hints-and-tips.blogspot.com/2012/12/google-plus-communities-for-blog-owners.html">why you might like to have a G+ community alongside your blog</a>.) <br /><br />They are configurable (size, dark/light, style, etc) - but  you need to work out how to apply the configuration settings to the code.   That said, I've added them to this site without any configuration (see the top of the sidebar), and the default options appear to work well. And it's not actually as hard as it looks: in general you just follow the pattern of:<br /><br /><ul><li>Changing   https://plus.google.com/{pageId}     to link to the "thing" (Page, Community, Profile) that you are displaying in the badge.</li></ul><ul><li>Using the "<div class="g-page" data-href="https://plus.google.com/{pageId}"></div>" form of the code, ie the one that's completely inside a "div" statement.</li></ul><ul><li>Adding extra information to it using <b>"data-"  </b> for example,   "<div class="g-page" data-href="https://plus.google.com/{pageId}" <b>data-layout="landscape" data-width="200"</b>></li></ul><br /><br />There is one interesting sentence in the announcement: <br /><blockquote class="tr_bq"><i>"<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 15.59375px;">Existing badges will stick around for up to 90 days, giving you time to configure the new version for your website. After 90 days, we'll automatically upgrade any Google+ badges to the new design.</span>"</i></blockquote>I wonder how that will relate to the Google + gadgets that are available in <a href="http://blogger-hints-and-tips.blogspot.com/2012/03/adding-gadget-to-your-blog-using.html">Blogger's Add-a-gadget function</a> now - maybe they will be automatically be changed too.   (In 90 days ... yeah, right ...)
